Hello there friends !

Over time, our skin may change due to many factors like our hormones, stress levels, health and wellbeing, change of season, age and lifestyle. The skin is the largest organ in the human body so it is important for us to take quality care of it. Part of doing so is finding what skin type we are, so we can better cater a skincare regime specific to meet our skin's needs.

What are the Skin Types ?

Your skin is normal, smooth and balanced complexion (not too oily or too dry); less problematic, little to no imperfection.
Your skin is oily, tend to be acne prone, dull and shiny complexion; enlarged pores, pimples
Your skin is dry, dull and rough complexion; red patches, blotchiness and ashiness.
Your skin is sensitive, easily irritated; dry, itchy with areas of redness.
Your skin is combination, mixture of skin types where certain areas of your face is oily and others really dry; blackheads, overly shiny complexion.

Skincare for Skin Types

Choosing and using the right products for your skin is really important. Remember your skin type and use it as a guideline as to what products will better work for your skin. Here are a few tips and tricks in helping you find the skincare products just right for you !

Normal Skin

Cleanse and moisturise daily with basic gentle products.
Tone using a non-alcoholic based product so the essential oils in your face are not stripped.
Use a cream or gel moisturiser.

Oily Skin

Cleanse with gel- and liquid- based soap-free cleansers for oily or blemish prone skin. Those containing salicylic acid help declog pores and get rid of impurities.
Tone with astringents to help remove strip dirt and excess oils on your face
Moisturise with a gel-based moisturiser

Dry Skin

Cleanse with a cream-based cleanser as they will not strip your face of natural essential oils.
Avoid foam face washes since they strip away lipids and avoid any harsh acids
Tone with a non-alcohol based toner as it will not dehydrate your skin
Traditional lotions and creams are best for moisturising dry skins. Using a face oil or serum underneath moisturiser is also a good option

Combination Skin

Wash your face with gentle, gel-based lotion cleanser
Lightweight lotions and serums best for combination
Avoid soap bar cleanser as they tend to be too dying.
Avoid products with irritants such as alcohol or fragance
Use toners with skin-repairing properties packed with antioxidents
Spot treat the areas of your skin i.e use a rich, creamy moisturiser in drier areas of your face and light lotion on the oily areas.

Sensitive Skin

Cleanse with fragrance-free and non-alcoholic gentle cleansers to avoid irritation
Tone with non-alcoholic toner with soothing properties
use products that contain anti-inflammatory ingredients e.g. licorice root extract
Use a cream based moisturiser.

Ann's Skin Story
I have always had combination skin, tending to be a little oily in the T-zone and dry around my nose. Cleansing is always important as it helps remove build up of dead skin cells, dirt and impurities that clog your pores when you're out and about. I always change my cleansers every so often as I don't want to have my skin reliant on one particular product. Currently, I am trying out the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. So far it seems okay but I will keep you posted !

Stay hydrated
Wash your skin thoroughly every day
Remember to gently exfoliate to remove build-up of dead skin cells
Moisturise your skin daily
Avoid direct sunlight; wear UVA & UV ray-blocking sunscreen, hat and sunglasses
Avoid smoking

Food for Thought: How To Eat Your Way To Healthier Skin

Hey there, lovely readers !

As they all say, you are what you eat ! Your skin may be a sign of how well you take care of your total health and wellbeing. Even with the help of a great skincare routine, beautiful skin always starts with nourishing your skin from within. Having a balanced diet of natural foods is essential in maintaining your skin health.

Now I am no professional on science of skin like the dermatologists, but here are 6 foods that I have learnt along the way that helped improve the quality of my skin and complexion. I hope these simple tips may help you too !

Vegetables
Spinach is my favourite leafy green !! As Pop-eye would appreciate, it contains vitamin A which prevents your skin from looking dull, rough and irritated.

Apples have lots of vitamin C !

Fruits
Most fruits such as blueberries and oranges contain high levels of vitamin C. Vitamin C helps keep our skin firm and fade dark spots. Woohoo !

Avocadoes
Unsaturated fats found in avocadoes, olive oil, nuts and seeds provide essential fatty acids to help keep your skin looking smooth and supple.

Dark chocolate (70% or more, to be specific)
Foods like dark chocolate (holler at my fellow chocolate loving pals !!) contains a lot of antioxidants to promote a healthy glow.

Nuts and Seeds
Almonds, pine nuts and sunflower seeds contain high levels of vitamin E, which help our skin fight against free radicals aka. premature aging. Flaxseeds also have omega-3 fatty acids to improve skin elasticity and promote skin hydration , a great alternative to fish oils.

Water
Ahhh.. the classic H20. but isn't it just the best? Zero calories, perfect for anyone who counts their calories (hey i'm not judging). Staying hydrated helps keep your skin plump as moisture is retained. My advice? Drink at least one and a half litres of water a day. Bye bye tired skin!

Foods You Might Just Want To Avoid:

Dairy Products
For me, as soon as I stopped eating yogurt and cheese, my skin drastically improved with less pimples and redness. Say no to inflammation !

Refined and Processed Food
This is a bit of an obvious one. These foods typically tend to be high in fat, sugar and salt plus probably contain plenty of chemicals (aka. not too good for your skin).

However, don't never be too restricting on eating foods that may not be the best for you. Enjoy yourself, just remember the key is moderation.
